What is the MakerSpace?

The MakerSpace is all about unlocking human potential. But, for founder Stephen Gray, this innovative space also represents so much more. Leaving a career in financial services, Stephen was looking to start something based on what motivated him personally – working with people, working with technology and working in a uniquely creative environment.

Located in Durban, the idea was to create a community workshop where people could get their creative juices flowing and make things using equipment that’s typically only accessible to those working in particular industries – things such as laser cutters and 3D printers. Beyond giving people access to tools and equipment, there’s also an emphasis on creating a community, explains Stephen. ‘A maker is someone who decides to make something that they’ve never made before. Makers then share their experiences and what they have learnt with others,’ he says, stressing that the sharing side of things is a big part of what maker communities are all about.

‘We have a big focus on community learning. We want anyone to be able to come to the space, learn different skills and share their knowledge with others in the community. And, ultimately, we want everyone having fun.’
